Ashurst Australia

The tax team at Ashurst Australia has a strong strength in indirect tax, providing stamp duty, GST, payroll tax and land tax services. The direct tax services involve such things as income tax, international tax and withholding taxes. Most of its tax professionals have experience working in the Big Four accounting firms. In addition, it has a strong tax disputes team involving Bill Cannon, Geoff Mann, Barbara Phair, Peter McCullough, Vivian Chang and Sanjay Wavde.  

The tax team provides service to financial institutions, investment banks, corporations and government entities. Clients include nbn, GE, BHP Billiton, Downer EDI, Macquarie, Fletcher, Brookfield, ANZ, CBA, Westpac and NAB. It is helping Woolworths on both indirect and direct tax issues, including direct tax structuring, GST and stamp duty. 

Steve Whittington joined the firm as a senior associate in 2019. 

Baker McKenzie

The team at Baker McKenzie is led by John Walker. Other key practitioners are Amrit Maclntyre, Dixon Hearder, Miles Hurst and Simone Bridges. Dixon Hearder leads engagements with the ATO on MAAL, GST, DPT and other multinational tax reviews. Miles Hurst specialises in income tax and focuses on major projects, M&A and financing arrangements. The team also provides tax practice such as indirect tax, dispute resolution, wealth management and employment taxes. In addition, it has a strong reputation in the renewable and alternative energy sector regarding tax practice.  

In 2018, the team helped Resonance on various tax aspect issues, including tax due diligence, acquisition structure, tax modelling, review and drafting of the transaction documents. 

Simone Bridges was promoted to be a partner. In addition, the firm has expanded by hiring five practitioners in recent years.  

DLA Piper Australia

The team at DLA Piper Australia is led by Jock McCormack. Other key professionals are James Newnham, Eddie Ahn and Kenny Mui. It has a strong capability in international tax practice as it is supported by its global team of more than 400 tax lawyers and economists. It also offers services including corporate tax law, business-related matters and corporate transactions. It serves clients covering real estate, technology, insurance and funds sectors. 

Greenwoods & Herbert Smith Freehills

Greenwoods & Herbert Smith Freehills provides a wide range of tax services such as transactional tax, tax disputes and indirect tax. Its clients cover various industries such as real estate, financial services, infrastructure, and energy and resources. It has built a strong relationship with local authorities, involving the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), State and Territory Revenue Offices and State and Federal Treasuries. 

The team helped Wesfarmers on a transactional tax issue. It advised on all aspects of the demerger such as obtaining ATO approvals and class rulings for shareholders and employee share scheme participants. 

Managing director Tony Frost retired in 2018. David Bond, Michael Anderson and Kristy-Lee Malkki joined the firm in recent years.

Some of key professionals in the Johnson Winter & Slattery team include Richard Gelski, Prashanth Kainthaje, Stewart Grieve and Andy Milidoni. It provides various tax services such as M&A, tax disputes and litigation, corporate and international tax advice. Its clients cover a wide range of industries, including pharmaceutical, technology and fast moving consumables sectors. 

The team is helping a client on both tax advisory and disputes issues. It advised the client on all Australian income tax and state stamp duty aspects of the franchising model. It also assisted a client regarding their general Australian tax obligations. 

Georgia Whiteside joined the firm as an associate in 2019. Senior associate Kimberly Levi and partner Reynah Tang left the firm.

O'Rourke Consulting

Kevin O’ Rourke and Amelia O’ Rourke are two key practitioners at firm. Both of them focus on indirect tax. Kevin is Chair of the Indirect Tax Committee for Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Amelia, a former ATO assistant commissioner, helped in the design and implementation of Australia’s GST. Its practice includes GST, wine equalisation tax, luxury car tax and fuel tax credits.
