Baker McKenzie assisted one of their clients, Bardinet with a complex acquisition case involving multiple areas of law, including tax issues, regulatory affairs, import/export duties, transfer of assets, and future tax liabilities. The firm also worked with another client, Cigarrera Bigott (British American Tobacco) on an ongoing analysis of the tax implications of commercial decisions along with organizing fiscal planning alternatives. Baker McKenzie assisted them in fulfilling legal obligations while also strategically planning to optimize the client’s tax position in Venezuela.

During the research period, Baker McKenzie has been active in the Venezuelan transactions market. The firm acted for United Distillers Group, a Spanish owned beverage company in the sale of their Venezuelan rum brand Diplomático to Brown- Forman. The $725 million deal is said to be one of the transactions of the year for Venezuela’s M&A market.
