Monteiro e Monteiro Advogados Associados was stablished in 1990 with offices in Recife (headquarter), São Paulo, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, Fortaleza, São Luís and Salvador. The team advises on consulting and planning services in corporate and administrative/constitutional law, and it is mainly focused on tax litigation. The firm has expertise in associations of vehicle assemblers as well as on fuel distribution.

Starting in 2006, the team represented Pague Menos before one of the Federal Regional Courts, in a collective Writ of Mandamus that aimed at the recognition of a high volume of Federal Taxes (PIS and Cofins) to be recovered by the client, anchored in the Law 11.033/2004. Through industrious work developed, the ministers of the First Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice ended up granting the Special Appeal of Pague Menos, recognizing the right to maintain the credit of the monophasic PIS/COFINS. Such decision was the first positive legal precedent on the matter in Brazil, serving as a precedent for all the other suits dealing with the controversy, in all instances.

Gilma Carvalho left to start a solo career as a medical lawyer. Additionally, the firm promoted Bruna Miranda as the head of oil & gas royalties and public Biddings.

Client feedback

“Conhecimento aprofundado da área e agilidade na prestação de serviço.

“Monteiro e Monteiro displays professionalism and efficiency when dealing with the client. They are very dilligent on informing the most recent decisions to us - even the bad ones! This helps building a relationship of trust and colaboration. We are happy our partnership has generated good fruits!”

“Monteiro e Monteiro has showcased really deep technical understanding of tax discussions, and a good commercial attitude (in the sense that they usually come talk to us when there are new tax discussions happening). They also communicate well and directly with us, with no need of legal jargons!”
