Deloitte Legal Canada LLP (Deloitte Legal Canada) is a national law firm founded over 15 years ago. As an affiliate of Deloitte, Deloitte Legal Canada has access to Deloitte’s global network of subject specialists, advisers, in supporting clients and has the privilege of providing legal counsel to many of the world’s largest companies. Deloitte Legal* is one of only a few truly global legal service providers with over 2,000 legal professionals worldwide in 70 countries. Many of our senior practitioners joined Deloitte Legal Canada from the ranks of major Canadian law firms with the vision of leveraging Deloitte’s deep relationships to provide clients with world class legal advice. Deloitte Legal Canada is fully attuned to the nuances of jurisdictions, industries, and markets. Yet, we can also draw upon our extensive network of specialists.

Tax controversy and litigation

Tax authorities in Canada and around the world are becoming increasingly ambitious and sophisticated in their approach to tax audits. In today’s environment, it is paramount that taxpayers are thoughtful and strategic in planning the tax aspects of transactions, in their interactions and relationships with tax authorities, and in managing disputes when they arise. Deloitte Legal Canada’s team of tax lawyers provides tax advice in all areas of Canadian tax and assists clients in confirming that transactions are carefully executed, mitigating the risk of disputes with tax authorities, and resolving disputes on an appropriate basis when they arise.

Deloitte Legal Canada’s team of tax controversy and tax litigation lawyers represents clients on large and complex tax controversy and tax litigation matters, covering all aspects of Canadian tax law, including domestic and international income tax, goods and services tax (GST) and harmonized sales tax (HST), provincial sales tax and customs. Deloitte Legal Canada’s reputation as capable and credible tax litigators places us in a position to negotiate settlements with the tax authorities when the interests of our clients so dictate. Our tax litigation lawyers have ready access to the deep resources of the Deloitte network and its subject matter specialists—leading economists on transfer pricing matters, engineers on scientific research and experimental development (SR&ED) tax matters, and specialists in all areas of accounting, forensics, and valuation. Deloitte Legal Canada is well positioned to offer clients the full spectrum of tax services.

*“Deloitte Legal”, in Canada, means Deloitte Legal Canada LLP and, elsewhere, means the legal practices of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited member firms or their affiliates that provide legal services. For legal and regulatory reasons, not all member firms provide legal services.

Deloitte Legal Canada is a multi-specialization law firm with ready access to the wide resources of the Deloitte network and its subject matter specialists.

Deloitte Legal Canada’s tax controversy and litigation groups work hand-in-hand with Deloitte’s transfer pricing economists, research and development scientists and engineers, as well as other specialized tax practitioners. This reduces the difficulty of dealing with multiple firms and offers uniform quality and a coordinated approach to our clients. Our competitors, which are mainly traditional law firms, cannot seamlessly provide such services.

In our experience, clients are generally looking to simplify their relationships with professional firms and prefer a coordinated approach to the services they seek. Deloitte Legal Canada’s distinctive position as a law firm affiliated with Deloitte sets it apart from traditional law firms: Deloitte’s broad base of services coordinates with the entire C-suite, not only general counsels or chief legal officers. Accordingly, Deloitte Legal Canada’s legal services are delivered as part of a holistic set of solutions sought by our clients.

Deloitte Legal Canada brings together legal advice, strategy, and technology to develop innovative solutions, create value for our clients and their businesses. We address challenges with comprehensive thinking, powered by experience and insights drawn from diverse business disciplines, industries, and global perspectives. Deloitte’s global legal network provides a strategic perspective, helping clients meet their local responsibilities and thrive in the global marketplace. Deloitte’s global presence provides a one-stop-shop for clients.

Deloitte Legal Canada’s team is regarded for its wealth of knowledge and experience in all areas of Canadian tax law and generates mandates from corporations and major non-profit organizations. Our team advises clients at all stages of the dispute resolution process, including international income tax disputes, customs disputes, and various provincial tax matters, where we provide representation at all court levels. Our firm also offers support on cross-border tax issues. In parallel to Deloitte’s ever-growing tax practice, Deloitte Legal Canada has launched an Employment and Labor Law practice and a Data Privacy and Cybersecurity law practice, both in 2019.

Deloitte Legal Canada employs technology to pioneer innovative legal solutions. As part of the Deloitte organization, which has collected several technology-related accolades and has a strong track record in providing technology solutions, both through in-house capabilities and alliances with technology companies. Deloitte Legal Canada combines legal skills with innovative service delivery, solution platforms, and intelligent data analysis to find the right solutions for our clients.
