Deloitte Anjin

Deloitte Anjin has 450 tax professionals. The firm offers various tax services including general corporate tax, indirect tax, tax controversy, transactional tax and transfer pricing. The team includes tax specialists, public accountants, customs agents and tax attorneys. The global trade advisory group provides a wide range of services, involving customs audit and investigation assistance, remedy through customs appeal, FTA origin management consulting, customs and trade advisory service and transfer pricing consulting services. The client base at Deloitte Anjin covers consumer and industrial products, energy and resources, financial services industry, life sciences and healthcare, the public sector and technology, media and telecoms.

In 2017, Min Ho Shin advised a client on a tax refund in relation to a contribution-in-kind. Gun Woo Park helped a client deal with a general corporate tax issue. It was a matter of tax credits for R&D expenses paid to foreign company.

In 2017, Ho Suk Lee and Il Jong Park joined the tax controversy group. In addition, Ji Hyun Park, Ji Hak Seok, Yu Sang Jeong, Young Jo Song and Hong Chul Bae have become new partners at the firm.

Kim & Chang

Woo Hyun Baik and Buyung Moon Jung lead the tax practice at Kim & Chang. The team includes more than 100 attorneys and certified public accountants. The firm has more than 50 former officers from National Tax Services, Tax Tribunal, Tax and Customs Offices of the Ministry of Strategy & Finance and the Korea Customs Service. The firm provides services including tax planning, M&A, applications for tax exemptions, applications for tax rulings, transfer pricing studies, APAs, ACVA, tax health-checks, tax audit defence, tax appeals/litigation and MAPs.

In 2017, the firm advised JPMorgan Asset Management Real Assets on transactional tax issues. The team represented the client in the acquisition by another foreign fund of a building located in Seoul. In addition, the firm also helped a client on a tax controversy matter. The client is a construction company and the matter is valued at around $11.2 million. The team represented the client in multiple successful court appeals. It involved a final win at the Supreme Court level.

In 2017, Seo Sim, Kim Dong Woo, Jeon Woo Su and Kwon Mi Kyung joined the firm.

Samil PwC

Samil PwC has nearly 580 professionals in its tax practice. The firm provides services including global inbound and outbound tax services, transfer pricing, middle market services, global mobility and business process outsourcing services, and tax controversy and dispute resolution. The tax controversy team has more than 30 former officials, from both central and local government levels. The firm makes up approximately 40% of the market based on tax revenues among the big four firms in Korea. It has a Japanese tax team that advises Japanese investors on corporate tax and areas of specialist expertise. In addition, the team has an R&D function that studies and analyses the latest and crucial developments in Korea and international tax policies and trends.

Dong-Youl Lee assisted a client with general corporate tax matter. The firm helped the client with decision making related to a local tax audit of its subsidiary in China. In 2017, Young-Jae Cho advised a Korean construction company on a tax controversy issue. Samil PwC provided tax advice and assistance regarding the successful refund of acquisition tax.

Samil PwC hired 12 tax professionals including two partners from Deloitte Korea during the research period. The firm also hired four tax and customs officials form the National Tax Service and Korea Customs Service to strengthen the capabilities in tax controversy and dispute resolution services areas.

Samjong KPMG

Samjong KPMG is able to offer clients an international service thanks to its connection to the global KPMG network. Its team includes certified public accountants specialised in tax, tax accountants, lawyers and National Tax Service tax specialists. It provides both general and comprehensive tax consulting services.

Dong-hoon Kim recently assisted a client with both indirect tax and tax controversy issues. It requested a refund for an overpaid withholding tax on dividends.


Sai Ree Yun, Seok Hoon Kang and Dong Soo Kim lead the tax practice at Yulchon. The firm provides services including international tax, corporate tax, due diligence, transactions, foreign direct investment, dispute resolution and litigation. It advises clients on M&A, inbound and outbound structuring, cutting-edge ruling requests, compliance, tax audit defence and tax appeal. 

In the past year, Dong Soo Kim, Sang Woo Song and Young Hwa An helped Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering on a transactional tax matter. It advised on the optimal tax structure as to complete the restructuring transaction and resolved tax issues within a short timeframe.

In 2017, Won Bong Yang and Won Ju Lee joined the firm as a senior certified public accountants (CPAs). In 2018, Chung Sik Yoon joined the firm as a tax consultant and Dong Hoon Ha joined the firm as a senior CPA.
