Partner Donald Vella heads the tax department at the firm and is a key figure in the team.

During the research period Vella advised an investment manager on the structuring of a Maltese carried interest vehicle regarding structured investment funds and advising on the potential tax implications of the structures.

Deloitte

Deloitte Maltese has one of the largest tax practices in the market with seven partners and more than 90 tax professionals. The tax team provides advice to domestic and international clients on their cross-border transactions and challenges by the tax authority. 

The firm has a dedicated tax team for specific areas such as business tax, M&A, private client, VAT and also has a dedicated expatriates’ employer group. 

The firm points to industry specialities in areas such as iGaming, shipping, aviation and real estate transactions. 

Conrad Cassar Torregiani is a notable figure and is the partner leading the international tax group.  

During the research period Deloitte strengthened its VAT team with the appointment of Chris Borg, a VAT specialist and former CEO of Boston Consulting Group, as a principle. 

Borg led the team advising a cruise line operator on its VAT, customs duty and excise duty issues relating to a cruise line operator.

EY

The EMEIA Tax Center at EY is organised as a supranational entity covering the entire Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) region, with its Intercompany Effectiveness and operational transfer pricing practice serving clients’ needs across all jurisdictions.

Led by Oslo-based partner Sveinung Baumann-Larsen, it brings together multi-disciplinary experience and resources focused on IT, accounting, and tax from the entire region in its work. This work covers some of the leading global companies in their respective fields and includes those involved in retail and consumer products, energy and pharmaceuticals, to name but a few.

Fenech & Fenech Advocates

Fenech & Fenech, one of the oldest Maltese law firms and has been active in Malta for more than 25 years for its private and corporate clients. The tax practice mostly advises international clients. 

The firm focuses on direct and indirect tax including import and excise duties, transfer duty, VAT, immigration and relocation services, and tax disputes. 

Rossane Bonnici leads the tax practice and specialises in financial services, group restructurings and cross-border structuring.

Bonnici led the tax team that advised a large gaming group on its cross-border reorganisation during the research period.

Gauci-Maistre Xynou (Legal | Assurance)

Gauci-Maistre Xynou (Legal | Assurance) provides tax legal services and specialises in maritime law. The firm has increased its focus on personal and corporate tax following the increase in demand for citizenship and residency programmes during recent years. The firm also advises on structuring and licensing, investment funds and trusts. Partner Despoina Xynou leads the tax practice.

During the research period the firm advised a client on the tax aspects of the acquisition of a yacht including developing the corporate structure and advising during the acquisition.
